The inscription dated April 22, 967 A.D. indicates Bantãy Srĕi is the only major temple in Angkor that was not built by a king, but by a Brahmin who may be a tutor to Jayavarman V. Construction is credited to a palace named Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha where the temple is surrounded by a town called Īśvarapura.

The Yajñavarāha temple is mainly dedicated to the god Śiva and has intricate carvings on the walls and small dimensions of the building. Some speculate that it is associated with many devatas carved on the walls of buildings. Banteay Srei means 'Fortress of Women' and supposedly built by a woman.

The temple has been ravaged by looting and vandalism for centuries. Authorities moved some of the original statues to the National Museum in Phnom Penh and replaced them with concrete replicas. In 2000 to 2003 a conservation project installed a drainage system to prevent water damage and prevent damage to the walls by trees.

Banteay Srei is built mostly of hard red sandstone that can be carved like wood. Bricks and laterite are only used for walls and some structural elements where the temple is famous for the beauty of lintel and inland sand. Pediment has the topic of the scene for the first time in the history of Khmer architecture.

The library is luxuriously decorated and the three main towers are decorated with male and female deities. Classic carvings include beautiful ladies with lotus flowers in hand and scenes from the Ramayana epics. Almost every inch of this interior building is covered in ornaments.
