Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Quila or Golden Fort is a fort as part of the old city of Jaisalmer built by Rajput Rawal in 1156 AD in Jaisalmer City, Rajasthan, India, on Trikuta Hill in the Thar Desert and as one of the "living citadels" in the world where almost a quarter of the old town's inhabitants still live inside the fortress.

The magnificent yellow sandstone wall is a bright lion color during the day will fade into gold at sunset as a camouflage in the yellow desert of Thar. The location at the top of the hill has a dominant panorama where a large defense tower is visible several miles around.

Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fortress in Rajasthan that stands at the crossroads of important trade routes including the ancient Silk Road. The first settlement outside the walls of the fortress to accommodate the ever-expanding population of Jaisalmer and has emerged in the 17th century and in 2013 declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group of Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

The city of Jaisalmer suffered a decline due to siege for 9 years by Sultan Alauddin Khalji and the fortress city was finally re-populated by some living devotees. During the reign of Rawal Lunakaran in 1530 - 1551 AD, the fort was attacked by Amir Ali from Afghanistan.

Mughal took control of the fortress until 1762. Initially the entire population of Jaisalmer lived inside the fort and today the old fortress and its surroundings still retain a population of about 4,000 people mostly from the Brahmin and Daroga communities.

The fort has a length of 460 meters (1,500 feet) and a width of 230 meters (750 feet) and built towers 76 meters (250) above the surrounding countryside. The outer ring has a wall as high as 4.6 meters (15 feet) and combines the 99 bastions built in the period 1633-1647. Four gates where one of them was once guarded by a cannon.

Inside the castle includes the Raj Mahal Palace as a residence by Maharawal Jaisalmer, 7 Jain temples built in the 12th century, Askaran Chopra dedicated to Sambhavanatha, Laxminath Temple dedicated to Lakshmi and Vishnu, also many elaborate havelis and carved from sandstone yellow. The castle has an ingenious drainage system called ghut nali.

Odzala-Kokoua National Park or Odzala National Park is a conservation area of 13,500 sq kilometers (5,200 sq mi) at the Cuvette-Ouest Department, Republic of the Congo, declared a protected area in 1935, biosphere reserves in 1977, and national parks in the year 2001 at.
