Great Santa Cruz Island

Great Santa Cruz Island is a pink sandy island in Santa Cruz Bank, Basilan Strait, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Peninsula Region, Philippines, where flakes of Organ pipe coral (Tubipora musica) mix with white sand. The island has a length of 2.6 kilometers (1.62 mi), a width of 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mi) and a coastal line of 6.6 kilometers (4.1 mi) is one of a series of beautiful islands in the Sulu Sea.

Great Santa Cruz Island boasts as the only small island that has pink sand in the Philippines. The color comes from T. musica destroyed from thousands of waves erosion to mix with white sand. T. musica is an alcyonarian original reef in the Indian Ocean waters and west of the Pacific Ocean as the only known species of the genus Tubipora.

This species is soft coral but has a unique and hard calcium carbonate skeleton that contains many pipes such as organ pipes. In each tube is a series of polyps each of which has eight feather-like tentacles and the skeleton is a bright red color.

To the northwest of The Great Santa Cruz Island is a smaller island called Little Santa Cruz Island is a protected area declared on April 23, 2000 as Great and Little Sta. Cruz Islands Protected Landscape & Seascape with a total area of 1,877 hectares (4,640 acres).

Routes and public transport: Flights to Zamboanga International Airport in Zamboanga City, then take a taxi to Paseo Del Mar to get a speedboat to Great Santa Cruz Island for 20 minutes. The earliest boat leaves at 07 am.

Advice: It takes permission to reach Little Santa Cruz Island which is the base of the Philippine Navy. The Great Santa Cruz Island is more open, but still needs guidance.

Timang Beach
