On July 7, 2008, Preah Vihear Temple was assigned to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The temple site in 1962 was damaged by being bombarded by Thai artillery forces after a long dispute between Cambodia and Thailand over territorial borders.

Prasat Preah Vihear has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the centuries-old Khmer Empire. The building became the main venue of imperial spiritual life and has been modified by successive kings that enrich the elements in several architectural styles.

Preah Vihear is built along the long north-south axis, this is different from other Khmer temples that have a conventional rectangular layout oriented to the east. The construction of this site in the early 9th century, but has a style of Koh Ker and Banteay Srei which was built in the 10th century.

The temple complex extends 800 meters (2,600 feet) along the north-south axis facing the plains to the north which is now cut off by the international border. The walkway and steps from 120 meters (390 ft) up the hill to the shrine at the summit at 625 meters (2,051 ft)

The path to the shrine is punctuated by five gopura where each marks a change in altitude. Gopura also obstructs the visitor's view of the next part of the temple until they pass through the gate, making it impossible to see the whole complex from a single point.
