Rasa Island

Rasa Island is a flat coral island covering an area of 8.34 sq km where 1.75 sq km is covered with coastal forest, 5.60 sq km mangrove and Ipil (Intsia bijuga), 0.39 sq km coconut forest and 0.60 sq km expanse of sand and corals declared as Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary to protect Red-vented cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia) in the Sulu Sea, off Narra beach, Palawan Province, Philippines.

Rasa Island is a low island surrounded by mangroves and tidal plains declared a protected area in 2006 as home to the largest population of Red-vented cockatoo (C. haematuropygia) or Philippine cockatoo or Katala or Kalangay as birds endemic in the wild in the Philippines.

The island is an irregular large mangrove swamp on a coral reef that extends about 640 meters (2,100 feet) at the southwest and northeast ends of about 0.5 kilometers (0.31 miles) from Casuarina Point and forms the northeast side of Mantaquin Bay . Only one third of the island is permanently dry and the rest is the tidal area.

Rasa Island is surrounded by other islands including Arena Island and coral islands on the Aborlan coast to the north, while Mantaquin Bay includes Linda Island and Emelina Island in the south. All islands and waters are managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in partnership with the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program of the Katala Foundation.

Other endemic birds also inhabit the island, including black-naped oriole (Oriolus chinensis), rufous-tailed tailorbird (Orthotomus sericeus), blue-headed racket-tail (Prioniturus platenae), white-vented shama (Copsychus niger), grey imperial pigeon (Ducula pickeringii), Swinhoe's egret (Egretta eulophotes) and Mantanani scops owl (Otus mantananensis). The waters also have green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Dugong dugon.

Routes and public transport: Flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport in Puerto Princesa City, then drive to Narra for 90 kilometers (56 miles) or 2.5 hours, then take a boat on the Panacan dock to Rasa Island for 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) or 30 minutes.

Take a bus or van at San Jose's terminal in Puerto Princesa City to the town of Narra. To get to the Panaca dock use the tricycle. To get to Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary rent a bangka or an outrigger boat.

Advice: Rasa Island is managed as part of Narra barangay of Panacan which is perfect for nature lovers, bird watchers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The boat tour to Rasa Island is usually for 3 hours.

The best time to watch the Filipino Kakaktua around 3 pm where the birds return to the island to perch in the trees. Sometimes, cockatoos are known to eat in malunggay or radish trees near the Panaca dock early in the morning.

The mangrove swamps on Rasa Island are full of sand flies that can cause itchy bites, make sure you protect yourself with an insect repellant before heading to the island. Sari-sari stores near the Panaca pier sell sachet lotion of repellant insects.

Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Odzala-Kokoua National Park or Odzala National Park is a conservation area of 13,500 sq kilometers (5,200 sq mi) at the Cuvette-Ouest Department, Republic of the Congo, declared a protected area in 1935, biosphere reserves in 1977, and national parks in the year 2001 at.
